Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising (百英雄伝 Rising) is the companion game for Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. It was released on May 10, 2022.

Development[]

The final stretch goal for the kickstarter campaign, called "A Quiet Place", was announced to be a companion game. It cost $7 as an add-on pledge during the campaign or for those who purchased it at the slacker backer store.

At E3 in June 2021, the name of the game was announced to be Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising, with a release date set for 2022.

At the Xbox panel at the Tokyo Game Show on September 30, 2021, some game play footage was shown. They also announced that the scenario writing was being handled by Tadashi Satomi. They revealed one character, named Garoo. The game was also announced to be a side-scrolling action RPG based on the themes of town building and treasure hunting.

At the 505 Games panel at the Tokyo Game Show on October 1, 2021, it was announced that there would be three main characters, Garoo, JB (later changed to CJ), and Isha. It was also announced that seven characters from Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes would appear in Rising, and the three main characters in Rising would appear in Hundred Heroes.

Gameplay video and other announcements showed that players would be able to switch between the three characters as they played the game.

The game was released on May 10, 2022. There was a bit of controversy as many fans who backed the original Kickstarter campaign and pledged money to purchase the game did not receive their download codes on time. Codes were still being distributed several months after the game was released.

Story[]

As announced at Tokyo Game Show on October 1, Rising is a thrilling adventure and town building game. The gist of the story surrounds the ancient ruins and Rune-lenses.

The story is set in the town of New Nevaeh, a remote region of where the main game will be set. It is a poor rural town that mines ore. A few months before the start of the game, there was an earthquake, which lead to the discovery of some ruins nearby. It became lively, and many people who wanted to get rich appeared.

From underground, raw lenses and Rune-lenses appear, becoming entangled with the ancient ruins. The Heroes will find treasure in these ruins, invigorating the town, but behind this treasure hunting adventure, a struggle that will shock the world will turn up.

While the main characters are finding treasure in the ruins, they will also assist in the recovery of New Nevaeh, which was damaged in the earthquake and is having economic difficulties. In the process, they will have to settle disputes between those who oppose the exploration of the ruins and the explorers. They will also deepen their relationships with each other as they learn why they are looking for treasure. Furthermore, tit will gradually be revealed that the ruin's secret will figure prominently in one character's fate. Behind this treasure hunting adventure, a scheme that will soon shock the world is slowing moving along.

Original Plans[]

  • It was a planned partnership with Natsume-Atari to create an Town Creation RPG. Natsume-Atari is known for some great pixel based games like Ninja Warriors and Wild Guns.
  • It was released before the main game to help ease the wait from the end of the Kickstarter campaign until it is completed.
  • It was to feature a variety of different "lifestyle" mini-games that will allow you to gather a wide variety of different materials to build up your own town or farm.
  • They are thinking about a way to for these materials to transfer over to Hundred Heroes.
  • It will be set in the same world and time period as Hundred Heroes, so some of the characters will appear in this game.
  • There may be some kind of battle mechanic, but it is still under consideration.

Mechanics[]

Once enemies have been slain and resources gathered, they will not be available until you leave the dungeon. If you can't find the resources you need, head back to your Base and try again after a good rest!

Potions and balms are stored in the Stowpack. Resources gathered in the dungeons will be held in the Resource Bag and then transferred to your Storehouse once you return to the city. Once the resource bag is full, you will not be able to gather any more. You can trow away any resources you don't need!

Boss battles - a Menacing boss lies in wait deep inside each dungeon. Once they've been discovered, defeating them is your only means of escape. Watch closely and attack when the enemies reveal their WEAK point to deal major damage. Bosses can be defeated multiple times to get various resources, although some drop only the first time the boss is defeated.

Shield Gauge - some stronger enemies, such as bosses, are protected by a shield. Until you have broken through the shield, the enemy will take no damage. Pay close attention to the enemy's shield gauge as well as their health gauge.

Release and Reception[]

The game was released on May 10, 2022, but not without some problems. Some backers received their codes early, but a large number did not receive their codes on time. Yetee, the company responsible for distributing the codes, attempted to make up for the delay, but even after several days, many still did not have their codes. In an attempt to deliver codes to the fans, Yetee sent codes for a Steam version to those backers who were still waiting. Some were frustrated as they were waiting for their original Steam code. Others reported that they could not redeem the code as it was already in use. Codes were still being sent to backers weeks and even months, in some cases over a year, after the release of the game. Several backer Newsletters acknowledged the problem and apologized for it.

The game received mostly positive reviews. Many reviews believed it would be a good game to whet the fans' appetites for the future Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. IGN gave it at a 7 out of 10, stating that it was "[f]un, short-lived, slightly repetitive, yet leaving me interested to know more." Gamespot also gave the game a 7 out of 10, stating "[t]he monster-filled mines, lush forests, raging volcanoes, and magic-enchanted ruins look beautiful, and offer lots of enemies to fell and loot to amass." Screenrant gave it 3.5 stars out of 5, stating that "[d]espite the combat and gameplay loop not being as great as the town-building and characters, it's still a really enjoyable game."

Many reviewers stated that the quest system was repetitive, adding that most of them were fetch quests, and that it was occasionally tedious. Another point that was often mentioned was the basic, and often simplistic, combat, especially early in the game. Others commented that it was quite dialogue heavy, especially in the first part of the game. They also noted the long cut-scenes and parts of the story that pull the player from exploring.
